      Tanzanian Sapphires

      Tanzanian sapphire can get weird.

      That is probably the easiest way to explain why we like it.

      Blue can move into violet. Green can carry yellow. Purple can turn warmer under different lighting. Some stones show obvious zoning. Others are full of silk, twinning, crystals, or inclusions that make the inside of the sapphire just as interesting as the color.

      And then you find a clean one with a color you were not expecting at all.

      Tanzania produces sapphire from several very different gem regions, including the Umba Valley in the north and Songea, Tunduru, and Winza farther south and inland. The material coming from those areas can look dramatically different from one locality to the next.

      There is no one Tanzanian sapphire.

      That is what makes the origin interesting.

      Umba Valley

      Umba is probably the Tanzanian sapphire locality we get most excited about.

      The Umba River Valley in northern Tanzania has produced sapphire in an unusually broad range of colors, including blue, green, yellow, orange, purple, pink, and stones showing combinations or changes between colors.

      It is also particularly well known for color-change sapphire. GIA has documented Umba stones that appear blue under daylight or fluorescent light and shift toward purple under incandescent light.

      But color change is only part of what makes Umba material interesting.

      The stones can have complicated internal structures, strong zoning, repeated twinning, silk, and inclusions that give individual sapphires a completely different personality. Gemological research has noted heavy repeated twinning as a particularly characteristic inclusion feature in Umba sapphire.

      Some people see that and think imperfect.

      We usually start looking closer.

      Color Change, Color Shift & Everything Between

      Not every Tanzanian sapphire changes color.

      But when they do, they can be spectacular.

      A true color-change sapphire shows a noticeable change in perceived color under different types of illumination. Other stones may show a more subtle color shift, where the balance between blue, green, violet, gray, or another tone changes as the lighting changes.

      Umba material is particularly famous for this, but Tanzanian sapphire in general can have complicated color behavior.

      Sometimes you think you understand the stone outside.

      Then you walk indoors.

      And you have a different sapphire.

      That is difficult to communicate with one photograph, which is why we pay attention to how these stones behave under several lighting conditions.

      Songea

      Songea, in southern Tanzania, has its own sapphire history and its own type of material.

      Sapphire production there became significant in the early 1990s, and the region has produced an unusually broad range of colors. Songea rough can show blue, green, yellow, purple, brownish tones, and combinations that do not always fall cleanly into traditional sapphire categories.

      Some Songea sapphire can have strong modifying colors.

      We do not necessarily see that as a problem.

      Sometimes a sapphire that cannot decide whether it is green, blue, gray, or something else entirely is much more interesting than one that gives you an easy answer.

      Songea is also an important locality to understand when discussing treatment. Some material from the region has historically responded to advanced treatments such as beryllium diffusion, so treatment disclosure matters.

      We evaluate the stone in front of us and disclose known treatment information individually.

      Origin does not replace disclosure.

      Tunduru

      Then there is Tunduru.

      Southern Tanzania around Tunduru has produced an extraordinary variety of gemstones, and sapphire is an important part of that story.

      The deposits east of Tunduru, particularly around river systems such as the Muhuwesi, Lumesule, and Ruvuma, have produced blue, yellow, green, pink, and purple sapphires. GIA field researchers have documented fine blue, pink, and purple sapphire rough from the region as well.

      Again, the attraction for us is range.

      You can have classic-looking material sitting next to something with strange zoning or a color that does not immediately remind you of sapphire at all.

      That unpredictability keeps things interesting.

      Winza

      Winza is another completely different chapter.

      Located in central Tanzania, Winza is known for both ruby and sapphire. Sapphire from the locality has been documented in pink, purple, and blue, with some stones showing very strong color zoning.

      Some Winza material can display distinct bluish-violet zones following the natural growth structure of the crystal.

      That is exactly the kind of thing that affects how we look at a piece of rough.

      Do you try to hide the zoning?

      Do you orient the stone to blend it?

      Or do you put it right where everyone can see it?

      Sometimes the technically obvious decision is not the interesting one.

      Inclusions Are Not Automatically the Enemy

      Tanzanian sapphire can have a lot going on inside.

      Twinning.

      Silk.

      Crystals.

      Growth features.

      Color zones.

      Fractures.

      Some stones are relatively clean.

      Others look like entire geological events happened inside them.

      Traditional grading tends to reward clarity, and clarity certainly matters.

      But we do not believe every visible inclusion makes a sapphire worse.

      An inclusion can create texture.

      Silk can change the way light moves through a stone.

      Twinning or zoning can make the internal structure visible in a way that gives the sapphire an identity you could never duplicate.

      The question for us is not simply, “Is it included?”

      The question is, “Does what is inside make the stone more interesting?”

      Sometimes the answer is absolutely yes.

      The Cut Has to Respect the Material

      Tanzanian rough can make cutting complicated.

      Strong zoning may mean that a small change in orientation completely changes the face-up color.

      A color-change stone needs to work in more than one lighting environment.

      Heavily twinned or included rough may have structural considerations that influence the final shape.

      And an unusual piece of material may simply look better if you stop trying to make it conventional.

      That is where the cutter matters.

      We look at where the color sits.

      We look at what is inside.

      We look at the crystal.

      Then we decide what deserves to stay.

      Sometimes that becomes a precision geometric cut.

      Sometimes an antique-inspired pattern.

      Sometimes something we have to design specifically for that piece of rough.

      The material gets a vote.

      Heated & Untreated Tanzanian Sapphires

      Tanzanian sapphire can be found both untreated and treated.

      Because Tanzania contains multiple deposits with very different types of sapphire material, it does not make sense to apply one treatment statement to the entire country.

      Some stones are beautiful exactly as they formed.

      Others may have been heated.

      Certain Tanzanian material has also historically been subjected to more advanced treatments, which makes accurate disclosure particularly important.

      We disclose known treatment information stone by stone.

      We would rather tell you exactly what we know than make a blanket statement because it sounds better.

      One Country. Very Different Sapphire.

      That is what we find most interesting about Tanzania.

      Umba does not look like every Songea stone.

      Songea does not define Tunduru.

      Winza brings something else entirely.

      Even two sapphires from the same locality may have almost nothing visually in common.

      Tanzania can give you clean blue sapphire.

      It can give you purple.

      Pink.

      Green.

      Yellow.

      Color change.

      Heavy zoning.

      Included material.

      Strange material.

      And stones that somehow manage to be several of those things at once.

      That is our kind of place.

      Choosing a Loose Tanzanian Sapphire

      Tanzanian sapphire works especially well when you choose the gemstone before deciding what the jewelry should look like.

      A color-change Umba sapphire may deserve a setting that lets you see as much of the stone as possible.

      A heavily zoned sapphire might dictate its own orientation.

      A purple or blue Winza stone may lead the design in a completely different direction.

      And a strange geometric piece from Songea may make the entire piece of jewelry obvious the moment you see it.

      Start with the sapphire.

      Learn what it does.

      Then build around it.

      Selected Because They Are Different

      We are not trying to find one perfect example of Tanzanian sapphire.

      That would miss the point.

      Some stones make the collection because of their color.

      Some because they change color.

      Some because the inclusions are incredible.

      Some because the rough allowed us to cut something we had not planned.

      And some because we looked at them and immediately knew we had never seen another sapphire quite like it.

      Those are difficult to leave behind.

      Where are sapphires found in Tanzania?

      Tanzania has several important sapphire-producing regions, including the Umba Valley, Songea, Tunduru, and Winza. Sapphire and other gem corundum have also been documented from additional Tanzanian localities.

      What is an Umba sapphire?

      Umba sapphires originate from the Umba River Valley in northern Tanzania. The locality is known for sapphire in a wide variety of colors and is especially famous for color-change material.

      Do all Umba sapphires change color?

      No.

      The Umba Valley is well known for color-change sapphires, but not every sapphire from Umba displays that phenomenon. The region produces material in many colors and appearances.

      What colors do Tanzanian sapphires come in?

      Tanzanian sapphires can occur in blue, green, yellow, purple, pink, orange and mixed or modifying colors. The exact color range varies between deposits.

      Yes.
