These diamonds are filled with naturally occurring inclusions that can look like scattered flecks, clouds, smoke, feathers, constellations, or entire little landscapes trapped inside the stone. No two are quite alike, and that is exactly the point.

At Caleb B. Quashen International, we do not automatically look at inclusions as something that needs to be hidden or removed. Sometimes they are the most interesting part of the diamond.

Some Salt & Pepper diamonds are bright and icy with only a dusting of dark inclusions. Others are dense, smoky, silver, gray, or nearly black. Some are transparent enough to see deep into the stone, while others have an almost mysterious, opaque quality.

Each one has its own personality.

And we choose them because of it.

What Is a Salt & Pepper Diamond?

A Salt & Pepper diamond is a natural diamond with visible internal inclusions.

The “salt” usually refers to lighter or white-looking inclusions, while the “pepper” refers to darker inclusions that may appear black, gray, or brown. The exact appearance depends on the type, location, density, and distribution of the inclusions inside the diamond.

Some stones have only a few scattered features.

Others are completely filled with them.

That variation is what makes the category so interesting. There is no single look that defines a Salt & Pepper diamond.

They can be crisp and graphic, soft and cloudy, dark and moody, or strangely celestial.

Inclusions Are Part of the Story

In traditional diamond grading, inclusions are generally treated as imperfections.

We look at them a little differently.

Natural diamonds form under extraordinary conditions deep within the Earth, and their internal characteristics are part of that history. Crystals, feathers, clouds, graining, and other features can remain inside the diamond as evidence of the environment in which it formed.

In some stones, those features barely affect the overall appearance.

In others, they become the appearance.

That is especially true with Salt & Pepper diamonds, where the inclusions are often the reason the stone is interesting in the first place.

We are not trying to make these diamonds look traditional.

We are trying to let them look like themselves.

The Cut Matters

Salt & Pepper diamonds can respond beautifully to less conventional cutting styles.

Rose cuts are especially well suited to this material because their broad facets and shallow profiles can showcase inclusions rather than hide them. Kites, hexagons, shields, elongated shapes, portrait cuts, and freeform designs can also work beautifully when the shape of the rough calls for something different.

We pay close attention to the stone before deciding how it should be cut.

Sometimes the goal is brilliance.

Sometimes it is transparency.

Sometimes it is preserving a strange inclusion pattern or unusual outline that would be lost if the stone were forced into a standard shape.

The rough usually tells you more than a diagram does.

You just have to listen.

Color, Texture & Personality

Salt & Pepper diamonds can appear in a surprisingly broad range of tones.

You may see cool silver, smoky gray, soft white, charcoal, deep black, warm brown, or combinations of several colors in the same stone.

Some have sharp black crystals suspended inside clear material.

Some look misty or frosted.

Others seem to contain tiny galaxies.

Lighting can change them dramatically as well. A diamond that looks soft and gray in one environment may flash silver or bright white in another. Darker stones can reveal unexpected transparency or patterns when light passes through them.

This is one of the reasons we prefer seeing the actual stone rather than judging it only from a grading report.

Choosing a Loose Salt & Pepper Diamond
