      Sapphire is corundum.

      That part is simple.

      Everything else gets more interesting.

      The same mineral can come out of the ground looking completely different depending on where it formed. One locality may produce soft pastel material. Another may lean toward deep blue, teal, yellow, violet, or green. Some sapphires are crystal clear. Others are full of silk, zoning, inclusions, or internal features that become part of the stone’s personality.

      That is why origin matters to us.

      Not because a country name automatically makes a sapphire better.

      But because geology leaves fingerprints.

      At Caleb B. Quashen International, we work with sapphire from established and emerging producing regions around the world. We look at the origin, the rough, the color, the inclusions, the treatment history, and ultimately the individual stone.

      The locality gives us context.

      The sapphire still has to earn its place.

      Why Sapphire Origin Matters

      Two sapphires can be the same species, similar in size, and still behave completely differently.

      Origin can influence color range, trace chemistry, inclusion patterns, crystal habit, zoning, transparency, and the way a stone responds to cutting.

      Some deposits are known for bright metamorphic sapphire.

      Others are basalt-related and may produce darker or more strongly modified colors.

      Some regions are famous for fine blue material.

      Others are far more interesting because of how unpredictable they are.

      That does not mean every sapphire from a certain place looks the same.

      Far from it.

      The interesting part is learning what a locality tends to produce, then finding the stones that break the pattern.

      Sri Lanka — Ratnapura & Ceylon Sapphire

      Sri Lanka has been producing sapphire for more than 2,000 years, and the island remains one of the most important sapphire sources in the world. (gia.edu)

      The majority of the Sri Lankan sapphires we work with come from the Ratnapura region.

      This material can range from classic blue to lavender, yellow, pink, parti colors, soft pastels, and opalescent stones with silk and internal glow.

      Sri Lankan sapphire can be elegant.

      It can also be strange.

      We like both.

      Madagascar — Sakaraha to Diego-Suarez

      Madagascar is one of the best examples of why “sapphire” should never be treated like one visual category.

      Southern Madagascar, including the Ilakaka-Sakaraha region, can produce an enormous range of metamorphic sapphire, while the far north around Antsiranana, historically known as Diego-Suarez, contains basalt-related deposits with a very different geological history. (gia.edu)

      We see everything from pastel blues and lavenders to violets, greens, yellows, parti colors, and softer opalescent material.

      One parcel can look like it came from several different countries.

      That is exactly why we keep buying it.

      Montana — American Sapphire with Its Own Personality

      Montana sapphire has developed a following for good reason.

      The color palette can be unmistakable — steel blue, teal, seafoam, green, gray, yellow, and stones that shift between several of those tones.

      We source Montana sapphire from a number of producing areas, including Eldorado Bar along the Missouri River, Rock Creek, Yogo Gulch, Gem Mountain, Blue Jewel Mine, Lewis & Clark Mine, and Potentate.

      Different localities can produce very different material.

      Yogo is not Rock Creek.

      Rock Creek is not Missouri River material.

      And that distinction matters when you start looking closely.

      Tanzania — Umba, Songea, Tunduru & Winza

      Tanzanian sapphire can get complicated very quickly.

      That is one of the reasons we like it.

      Umba can produce unusual colors and color-change material. Songea has an exceptionally broad color range. Tunduru is part of one of East Africa’s most diverse gem-producing regions. Winza can show strong zoning and intense pink, purple, and blue material. (gia.edu)

      Some Tanzanian sapphires are clean.

      Some are heavily included.

      Some change completely when the lighting changes.

      There is no one Tanzanian look.

      Good.

      Nigeria — More Than Dark Blue

      Nigeria is another origin that is easy to oversimplify.

      The country produces sapphire from several regions, including the Mambilla Plateau as well as other northern and central deposits.

      Some material is deep blue and saturated.

      Some leans green, yellow, teal, or parti-colored.

      Some is surprisingly bright.

      Some is dark enough that the cutter has to work to open it up.

      Nigeria is a good reminder that geology is only the beginning of the story.

      You still have to look at the individual crystal.

      Afghanistan

      Afghanistan has a long and complicated gemstone history, and sapphire is part of that story even though it is far less represented in the market than material from places like Sri Lanka, Madagascar, or Tanzania.

      When we come across Afghan sapphire, we pay attention because the material tends to be less familiar and less standardized.

      That makes it interesting to us.

      Not because rarity of origin automatically makes a stone better.

      Because unfamiliar material makes you look harder.

      Kenya

      Kenya sits within one of the richest gem-producing regions in East Africa, part of the broader geological belt that also connects important deposits in Tanzania, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Sri Lanka. (gia.edu)

      Kenyan sapphire can show strong color, interesting inclusions, and material that does not always resemble the more familiar sapphire coming from other origins.

      We are drawn to it for the same reason we are drawn to most of the stones on this page.

      It does not always give you an easy answer.

      This is what makes sapphire such an extraordinary gemstone.

      Sri Lanka and much of Madagascar can produce metamorphic sapphire with similarities in chemistry and inclusions, while Nigeria and some other deposits are basalt-related. Tanzania contains several localities with their own distinct geological stories. Montana is something else again. (gia.edu)

      Clear.

      Included.

      Pastel.

      Saturated.

      Color-change.

      Parti.

      Opalescent.

      Classic.

      Completely strange.

      That is why we do not think of sapphire as one thing.

      Origin Is Context, Not a Ranking

      Certain sapphire origins carry more prestige in the traditional gemstone market.

      That history matters.

      But we do not believe the name on the origin report should decide whether you love a stone.

      A remarkable sapphire can come from a famous deposit.

      It can also come from a locality most people have never heard of.

      We care about where a stone comes from because it helps us understand it.

      We care about the stone because that is what you are actually taking home.

      Heated & Untreated Sapphires

      Sapphire treatment varies by origin and by individual stone.

      Some sapphires are untreated.

      Others are heated, a practice that has been used in the gemstone trade for generations and can improve color or clarity. More advanced treatments also exist, which is why disclosure matters. GIA notes that heat treatment is widely accepted, while untreated fine sapphire may command additional rarity and value. (gia.edu)

      We do not make one treatment claim across an entire country or collection.

      We look at the stone.

      If it is untreated, we say so.

      If it is heated, we say so.

      If more detailed treatment information is available, that belongs with the gemstone too.

      Why We Buy by Origin

      Knowing where a sapphire comes from changes the way we look at it.

      It helps explain the color.

      The inclusions.

      The rough.

      The cutting challenges.

      The things we might want to preserve.

      But origin alone never gets a stone into the collection.

      Some sapphires make it because of exceptional color.

      Some because of zoning.

      Some because of their internal glow.

      Some because they come from a locality we rarely see.

      And some because the stone is simply too interesting to leave behind.

      That last category happens a lot.

      Choosing a Sapphire by Origin

      Some clients start with a color.

      Some start with a shape.

      Some want a specific country or mine.

      Others do not care where the stone came from until they see the right one.

      There is no wrong way to begin.

      Sapphire Origin Questions

      Does sapphire origin affect value?

      It can.

      Certain origins carry historic prestige or market premiums, particularly for exceptional stones. But origin is only one factor. Color, clarity, size, treatment, cut, rarity, and overall beauty all matter.

      Can you tell where a sapphire comes from just by looking at it?

      Sometimes a stone may show characteristics associated with a particular region, but visual appearance alone is not always enough for a reliable geographic origin determination.

      Professional laboratories use a combination of microscopic inclusions, spectroscopy, trace-element chemistry, and other testing when issuing origin opinions. (gia.edu)

      Which countries produce sapphire?

      Important sapphire-producing countries include Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Tanzania, Nigeria, the United States, Myanmar, Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, and several others across Asia and Africa. (gia.edu)

      Is Ceylon sapphire the same as Sri Lankan sapphire?

      Yes.

      Ceylon is the historic name for Sri Lanka, and the term “Ceylon sapphire” is still widely used in the gemstone trade.

      Why do sapphires from different origins look different?

      Different geological environments affect trace elements, inclusions, crystal growth, zoning, and other characteristics inside the sapphire.

      Those differences can influence color and overall appearance, although individual stones from the same deposit can still vary dramatically.

      Are all sapphires from one origin treated the same way?

      No.

      Treatment varies by individual stone. Some are untreated, some are heated, and certain material may undergo other treatments.

      We disclose known treatment information on the individual gemstone listing rather than applying one statement to an entire origin.
