Growth Features & Habits in Gemstones: Nature’s Handwriting

What Are Growth Features?
A growth feature is a natural internal or external characteristic that formed as the crystal grew. Think of it as a snapshot of the environment at that moment in geological history. For natural gems, these features are records of the Earth’s processes. For synthetics, they reveal the hand of the lab.
Some of the most common growth features include:

What About Growth Habits?
If growth features are the diary inside the gem, then growth habits are the handwriting on its cover. A crystal’s growth habit refers to its external shape—the form it naturally prefers as it stacks atoms layer by layer.
These habits are not random. They reflect the interplay between the gem’s internal structure and the conditions of its environment.
For example:

Tourmaline often stretches out like pencils, forming long, vertically striated columns.
