What Is a Gemstone Parcel?

A parcel is simply a group of gemstones sold together as one lot.

That could mean:

A group of small sapphires.

A diamond parcel.

A matched or near-matched suite.

Several stones from the same origin.

A color group.

A selection of similar cuts.

Or a mixed lot that gives a designer several directions to work with.

The point is not that every stone is identical.

Often, the variation is the useful part.

Sapphire Parcels

Sapphire is especially well suited to parcel buying.

A group may contain stones with similar colors and sizes for a coordinated jewelry collection.

Another may include a wider range of blue, teal, green, yellow, parti-colored, or unusual material.

“Parcel” can mean very different things in the gemstone trade.

We would rather tell you exactly what we know than simplify the description into something that sounds better.

Natural Variation Is Part of the Parcel

A parcel of natural gemstones will often show variation.

That may include:

Color.

Tone.

Saturation.

Clarity.

Inclusions.

Shape.

Cutting style.

Dimensions.

And occasionally treatment or origin when the parcel contains mixed material.

That does not automatically make the parcel worse.

For many designers, that variation is exactly what makes the group useful.

The goal is not always ten identical stones.

Known treatment information is included in the listing.

If treatment varies within a parcel, that should be explained as clearly as possible.

Are parcels only for wholesale buyers?

No.

Collectors and retail customers may purchase available parcels unless a particular listing is specifically restricted to trade clients.
