Others lean green, yellow, teal, violet, or somewhere between several colors at once. Some are dark and saturated. Some are surprisingly bright. Some are clean enough to let the color do all the talking.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eAnd some have enough going on inside that you end up looking at the inclusions just as much as the color.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eThat range is what interests us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eAt Caleb B. Quashen International, we are not looking for one ideal version of Nigerian sapphire.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eWe are looking for the individual stones that make us stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eMore Than One Nigerian Sapphire Locality\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eNigeria has several sapphire-producing areas, and the material does not all behave the same way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eThe best-known source is the Mambilla Plateau in Taraba State, but sapphire has also been documented from northern and central areas including Antang, Gombe, Kaduna, Bauchi, and other deposits across the country. GIA field research notes that sapphire production in many of these areas is still largely artisanal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eThat matters because “Nigerian sapphire” is not a single visual category.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eDifferent deposits can produce different colors, saturation, clarity, zoning, and rough characteristics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eThe country is the origin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eThe locality helps explain the stone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eMambilla Plateau\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eThe Mambilla Plateau is the Nigerian sapphire locality that brought a lot of international attention to the country's material.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eFine blue sapphire from Mambilla entered the market in a major way around 2014, with some rough showing impressive size, clarity, color, and crystal shape. GIA documented Mambilla material from basalt-related secondary deposits, including rough ranging from smaller cutting stones to unusually large crystals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eWhat is interesting to us is that Mambilla material can look much more refined than people expect when they hear “basalt-related sapphire.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eStrong blue.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eGood transparency.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eUseful crystal shapes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eAnd rough that can give a cutter real options.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eBut that does not mean every Mambilla stone looks the same.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eSome are darker.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eSome are more open.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eSome carry modifying tones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eThe stone still has to be judged individually.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eAntang, Gombe \u0026amp; Northern Nigerian Sapphire\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eNigeria's northern deposits add another layer to the story.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eSapphires reported from Antang and Gombe have been documented in blue, bluish green, yellow, greenish yellow, and even bicolor material.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eThat is where Nigerian sapphire starts getting especially interesting for us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eA blue sapphire is easy to describe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eA stone that moves between yellow and green, or carries blue and yellow in the same crystal, is a little harder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eUsually those are the ones we want to see in person.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eNorthern Nigerian deposits have not been studied or marketed as extensively as Mambilla, which means there is still a lot of material that does not carry the same name recognition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eWe do not mind that.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eA famous locality is not what makes a stone beautiful.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eNigerian Sapphire Color\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eNigeria is often associated with dark blue sapphire, and plenty of that material exists.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eBut the country's color range goes much further.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eGIA has documented blue, parti-colored, yellow, purplish, and green sapphire from different Nigerian regions, with some southeastern material tending toward lighter blue than stones from other parts of the country.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eWe see that range as one of Nigeria's strengths.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eSome stones are rich and saturated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eSome lean earthy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eSome sit in that strange territory between teal, green, yellow, and blue.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eAnd occasionally you get a color that does not really need a neat name.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eThose are often more interesting anyway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eBasalt-Related Sapphire\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eMuch of Nigeria's better-known sapphire production is associated with basalt-related deposits.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eThat geological origin can influence the chemistry and appearance of the sapphire, but it does not mean every basalt-related sapphire will look dark or heavy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eMambilla is a good example.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eSome of the material discovered there showed strong color, good clarity, and very workable rough despite sharing geological similarities with other basalt-related sapphire deposits around the world.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eThat is why we try not to judge the stone by the category before we see it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eGeology gives you context.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eThe crystal gives you the answer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eInclusions, Zoning \u0026amp;
